About the Event

Join the Taubman Center for State and Local Government and the Bloomberg Center for Cities for a special event featuring Mayor David LaGrand of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Drawing from his experiences as an attorney, entrepreneur, state legislator, and city commissioner, Mayor LaGrand will share insights on leadership, community revitalization, and how local government can drive inclusive economic growth. He will be joined by his AY 24-25 Transition Term team to share more about the program and their experiences with him on the ground.

Mayor of Grand Rapids, Michigan

After serving as an Assistant Kent County Prosecutor, David LaGrand entered private practice in 2000 and became an active leader in the West Michigan business community. He went on to serve on the Grand Rapids City Commission, the Grand Rapids Public Schools Board, and represented his community in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2015 to 2022.

During his tenure in the legislature, David authored and introduced Michigan’s Clean Slate Laws and advanced significant reforms to Child Protective Services, reflecting his commitment to justice, opportunity, and community well-being.

David also co-founded Four Friends Coffee Shop in downtown Grand Rapids – one of the early anchors of the city’s revitalization. He and his team later launched Wealthy Street Bakery and Long Road Distillers, a craft distillery and restaurant with locations in Grand Rapids and Grand Haven.
